Job Description:

The Director of Communications will be closely aligned with the Vice President of Communications and will specifically develop, implement and measure executive and organizational communications, media relations, crisis communications, and special initiatives for the company. The Director will work closely with and provide strategic communications counsel to executives, business unit and cross-business team leaders and communications colleagues across RTSC.

This position is also responsible for leading media relations for the division. In this capacity, the individual will work with the Vice President of Communications to provide guidance to maximize opportunities in the media for positioning key executives, businesses, programs and special projects. The Director of Communications will work with corporate media resources to ensure that all media activities within the division operate within Raytheon (RTN) corporate guidelines.

Additional responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

• Serve as principal spokesperson for the Organizational Communications, Media and Stakeholder outreach functions on highly significant matters.
• Set strategic direction and establish division-wide policy for RSTC.
• Create organizational policies in alignment with RTN.
• Set media policies for RTSC and establish, enact and reinforce policies for Organizational Communications.
• Oversee press release process (creation, compliance, submission) across all business units
• Run the advocacy program for 3rd party attribution.
• Perform crisis communications activities compatible with the corporate crisis plan.
• Oversee Organizational Communications globally.
• Represent RTSC and the VP RTSC in corporate Public Relations group and media contacts.


This position reports to the Vice President of Communications and is located in Reston, VA at Headquarters (moving in 2010 to Ashburn, VA).


Required Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

• At least 14 years of related experience successfully managing a variety of strategic communications programs.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Excellent communication planning, implementation and measurement skills.
• Experience in stakeholder identification and outreach to a variety of target audiences, including: internal customers, external customers, third party advocates, media.
• Familiarity with the application and use of social media tools, technology and video production.
• Experience in crisis communications, mitigation and response.
• Demonstrated ability to think strategically and analytically.
• Excellent decision-making skills.
• Project Management skills and experience.
• Demonstrated ability to lead and/or managing and actively participate in teams.
• Knowledge and experience in managing and leveraging company memberships and participation in professional and industrial associations (PRSA, AUSA, etc)
• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to interface with all levels of management

Required Education (including Major):

Bachelors degree in professional communications, marketing or related field.

Other Requirements:

Travel: Up to 25% travel required (largely domestic, some international).


Desired Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

• Experience working with government entities, defense and civilian agencies.
• Understanding of global, cultural and diversity/inclusion issues and sensitivities.
