The Economic Policy Institute (EPI), the nation’s leading progressive economic think tank, is seeking an experienced director for its development department. The director is responsible for providing overall fundraising leadership and strategic direction. Reporting directly to the President, the Director of Development plans, implements, and supports all aspects of EPI’s development program. The ideal candidate possesses the following:

• Strong management skills (including non-profit management experience).
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
• Ability to influence and engage a wide range of donors to build long-term relationships.
• Self-starter with the ability to prioritize multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously.
• Ability to construct, articulate and implement the annual strategic development plan.
• Energy and passion for EPI’s mission.

The Director of Development will manage a staff of three and be part of the senior management team. The position requires strong leadership skills, at least ten years of progressively responsible work experience in development and fundraising related fields, and a Bachelor’s degree, or an equivalent combination of skills and experience.

Key responsibilities include:

Develop and implement strategies for donor cultivation, solicitation and maintenance through personal solicitation, letters of inquiry, proposals, appeal letters, and special events directed toward each primary funding constituency: labor, foundations, corporations and individuals.

Ensure timely prospect identification and research related to EPI’s primary funding constituencies.

Oversee and coordinate all grant proposals and reports. Work with Finance staff to prepare budgets and financial reports.

Design and coordinate fundraising activities to maintain development records, track results, and report on performance against fundraising goals.

Ensure preparation and dissemination of annual report and promotional materials as necessary, in coordination with Communications department, to support a comprehensive fundraising program.

Administer development office, including preparation and management of department budget, and the recruitment, training and supervision of staff and consultants.
