The World Resources Institute (WRI) is seeking a Deputy Director to provide strategic guidance and management for its Climate and Energy Program (CEP). WRI strives to set the world on a new course, one characterized by cleaner energy sources, healthier ecosystems and societies, technological innovation, and economic opportunity. Working with international, governmental, civil society, and business partners, CEP identifies and promotes effective policy design and strategies to address climate change. The 50-person Program currently works in fields such as renewable energy, U.S. federal and state climate policy, greenhouse gas accounting, carbon capture and storage, international emissions trading, the UNFCCC process, the relationship between forests and climate, and adaptation to climate change. The Program has a significant international focus, especially through partnerships in developing countries.

The Deputy Director will play a key role in the Program’s strategic development and should thrive on strategic thinking and coaching/guiding excellent research, analysis, and communications. S/he will take a lead role to ensure that CEP’s policy work is timely, relevant, and leads to real change on the ground. In close consultation with the CEP Director, the Deputy will:
Oversee the Program’s workstream leaders (senior staff), helping them set strategic priorities and develop/implement strategies and plans to achieve desired outcomes.
Play a lead role in identifying and pursuing key outreach and fundraising opportunities, as well as supporting ongoing donor stewardship efforts.
Support and mentor junior staff.
The position is located at WRI’s headquarters in Washington, DC and reports to the CEP Director

Responsibilities:

Strategic Direction:
• Support CEP Director in guiding CEP’s strategic development and research agenda by helping program staff develop a long-range vision and high-impact strategies for implementing that vision, and by collaborating with partners and other WRI programs.
• Working closely with workstream leaders, provide direction, motivation, and strategic guidance to CEP staff, including on project planning.
• Contribute to institutional management and represent CEP in the Program Director’s absence through participation in WRI Management Team meetings.
• Co-lead CEP development activities to include identification of strategic fundraising priorities in collaboration with senior Program and Development staff.

Management:

• Provide day-to-day management and oversight of CEP workstream leaders (senior staff).
• Help program staff focus on achieving results, and on critical issues and opportunities where new insights, analyses, proposals, or efforts could lead to significant impact.
• Motivate and develop CEP staff, and identify and manage/resolve conflicts and problems as they arise.
• Ensure workstream leaders are effective and supported in their leadership role, and follow up to ensure that planned objectives are achieved.
• Support the quarterly program budgeting process by helping ensure that projects are managed within budget and according to donor requirements.

Outreach:

• Shape CEP’s outreach and communication efforts and promote project and program research findings through external meetings and events as appropriate.
• Respond to media inquiries and external presentation/speaking requests as appropriate.
• Engage in direct and proactive communications with current and prospective donors.
Qualifications:
• Advanced degree with a minimum 8-10 years of collaborative strategic planning and team-building experience. Demonstrated experience as a leading expert in the substantive and political dimensions of climate policy and such related disciplines as environmental policy, economic policy, or trade policy.
• Proven track record of real-world outcomes and influence.
• Superb analytical and strategic thinking and planning skills as well as a results-oriented outlook and strong commitment to environment and development issues.
• Demonstrated ability for people management and desire to work in a collegial fashion as part of a team with little hierarchy. Ability to motivate and mentor staff.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and compellingly to a wide range of audiences both orally and in writing.
• International experience and multiple languages a plus.
