IREX seeks a strategic, innovative and collaborative Director of the Leadership Practice to spearhead IREX’s efforts to develop and deliver highly effective programs that cultivate leaders who subscribe to IREX’s mission of building just prosperous and inclusive societies.

The IREX Leadership Practice supports the cultivation of leaders at all levels of society including youth, community leaders, public managers, educators and media and business professionals, to drive positive change in their organizations, communities, and governments. The practice does this by offering training, consulting, mentoring, internships, academic fellowships, and networking opportunities to individuals in over 100 countries around the world. The Director of the Leadership Practice manages and mentors a team of over 45 talented staff who support, coordinate, design and implement programs within a nearly $85 million dollar portfolio of leadership development and exchange programs.

A self-starter, the Director of the Leadership Practice will continually assess the competitive environment to consolidate existing partnerships and to identify new opportunities for IREX to advance its mission. The successful candidate will have a deep understanding of international education and development and proven experience with leadership development, including with new models of developing leaders in partnership with governments, the private sector and the philanthropic community. A proven team leader, s/he will guide the Leadership Practice and collaborate with other IREX teams to develop and observe standards of excellence and to ensure customer and partner satisfaction. S/he will work with IREX’s Global Programs and the Strategy and Development Group to fine tune and maintain a framework for measuring the impact of IREX’s leadership development activities. S/he will work with professionals across IREX to cultivate a spirit of learning, innovation, and entrepreneurship and to further strengthen systems for delivering high quality services and products. S/he will maintain a broad understanding of leadership development, IREX’s comparative advantage, and IREX’s operating environment. This is a role that combines strategy, program execution, relationship building, and supporting the generation and acquisition of new revenue. The Director of the Leadership Practice serves on IREX’s senior management team, which provides leadership to the whole organization.


• Provides strategic vision and guidance to the Leadership practice.
• Publicly represents and promotes IREX’s leadership work to a range of external audiences.
• Ensures all projects assigned in the practice portfolio are measuring and achieving their intended impact, are compliant with donor and IREX policies, and are fiscally sound.
• Provides technical and management support and coaching to Leadership practice project heads.
• Liaises with funders at the stage of award negotiation and during project implementation.
• Provides high-level representation and support for large program events and key interventions.
• Contributes to creating new business opportunities for IREX through establishing new strategic relationships/partnerships, building on existing relationships/partnerships/programs, and supporting, and at times, leading technical • design of new initiatives, programming, products, and proposals.
• Develops and promotes practice technical expertise and program impact through strategic communications products and approaches.
• Prioritizes and executes plan for practice talent management, including recruitment, performance goal setting and management, and training and other professional development.
• Ensures IREX values are “lived” by practice staff by setting example and tone for practice and emphasizing the importance/necessity of practicing our values to achieve impact.
• Oversees Leadership Practice annual budget.


• Ability to lead, motivate, develop, mentor and manage a large, diverse team of high capacity international staff (both in the U.S. and in the field) in achieving Practice vision and impact goals.
• Ability to set and guide strategic vision and goals for the Practice, and contribute to setting short and long-term organizational goals through participation in IREX’s Senior Management team.
• At least ten years of progressive program and staff management, and leadership experience in international development, including field-based experience.
• Strong experience and knowledge of best practices in international exchange programming and youth/professional leadership development.
• Progressive experience capturing and implementing/managing multi-million dollar Department of State and USAID-funded programs required; experience capturing and managing privately funded programs preferred.
• Excellent organizational planning, presentation, and professional-technical writing skills.
• Agile learning skills that lead to personal and group continued learning of practice technical area.
• Strong donor, partner, and peer collaboration and negotiation skills.
• Strong budgeting and financial planning acumen.
