The American Physiological Society (APS) seeks an experienced association executive or executive-level scientist to serve as its next Executive Director. APS is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit membership society with more than 10,500 members devoted to fostering scientific research, education, and the dissemination of information in the physiological sciences. APS has an annual operating budget of $21 million, reserves of 3 times budget, and 79 staff. APS is relocating its offices from Bethesda to Rockville, Maryland in June 2018.

APS is poised to accept new executive leadership – a leader capable of collaborating with the Council (governing body) to create a forward-looking strategy and then moving briskly towards achieving that vision. The Executive Director will strengthen the Society’s management and ensure it has the financial resources to thrive now and in the future.

Ideally, the new Executive Director will
• be an excellent organizational leader with a track record of success
• have experience working with scientists, particularly in physiology or related fields
• have senior level experience leading a scientific organization of a similar type
• have experience in the publication of scientific journals
• understand current scientific trends and issues facing scientists including policy and funding
• understand the needs of diverse and multidisciplinary scientific audiences
• communicate successfully with diverse audiences across multiple platforms
• possess excellent strategic, leadership, and operational skills
• partner with and support the Council in the fulfillment of the APS mission
• lead staff in the effective execution of the approved strategies and goals
• cultivate or maintain relationships with external partners
