Chaloner has partnered with the American Optometric Association (AOA) on their search for a proactive, engaged and dynamic Public Relations and Communications Manager who will advance the awareness of and education about the optometric community and the importance of eye health.

The Manager will work with the Director, Strategic and Advocacy Communications, to further the AOA’s efforts to engage multiple audiences, including professionals, students, industry stakeholders, legislators and regulators, and patients, and to elevate AOA priority messages through media relations and communications initiatives.

The AOA represents approximately 33,000 doctors of optometry and optometry students, advocates for the profession and serves optometrists in meeting the eye care needs of the public.

Responsibilities and Duties

• Participate in public relations strategic development and planning
• Implement proactive communications campaigns through the year that help meet business objectives and strengthen the AOA brand and reputation; include analyses and outcomes metrics to measure impact of public relations initiatives (e.g., Contact Lens Health Week, Decorative Lens education, Save Your Vision month).
• Develop and cultivate relationships with appropriate press contacts at relevant publications.
• Work closely across multiple teams (e.g., membership, meetings) to address opportunities and challenges.
• Drive communications activities in collaboration with key external organizations furthering education about and advocacy for patient eye health and maintaining the doctor-patient relationship.
• Help manage external agency and direct programs to enhance strategic awareness and acceptance of initiatives among target stakeholders (e.g., federal agencies, healthcare community, patients, payors, advocates), ensuring to identify which messages and audiences fit initiative goals.
• Compose, edit and/or review copy for AOA internal and external advocacy communications, including messaging, reports, event communications, e-blasts and other advocacy editorial content as needed.
• Manage, refine and update communications tools in collaboration with communications specialist, including key message / talking point resource, facts and figures database.
• Assist with strategic communication requirements for executives, including metrics and progress reporting, presentation development, interview talking points.
• Provide media and public relations support for volunteer members and affiliates and for community events and presentations.
• Support video and supplemental campaign material development.
• Develop and manage relevant budgets.


• Minimum of 5 years of communications / public relations experience
• Experience crafting and executing integrated communications programs in support of business development goals
• Experience developing and overseeing development and delivery of a wide range of external communications assets
• Ability to juggle multiple deadlines and stakeholders and perform well under pressure with great attention to detail
• Budget management experience
• Strong MS Office experience including MSWord, Excel, and PowerPoint
• Bachelor’s degree
• Flexibility to travel as needed
• Knowledge of and passion for health care a plus
