WNG Washington Insiders Reception: Hong Kong

News Release: January 6, 2005

On Thursday, January 6, the Washington Network Group convened a Washington Insiders reception at the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (HKETO) in Washington, D.C.

Registration for this special event was complimentary for WNG Members and their guests. 100 people attended.

Our host for this event was Margaret Fong, Director-General of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (HKETO) in Washington, D.C. and her staff. As Director-General, Miss Fong is responsible for U.S.-Hong Kong bilateral trade relations, relations with the U.S. administration and Congress, prominent think-tanks and U.S. industries. Before the handover in 1997, Miss Fong served as the Assistant Private Secretary to the former Hong Kong Governor, Lord David Wilson.

Ms. Fong offered comments on the responsibilities of the HKETO in Washington and its efforts to strengthen the unique Hong Kong-U.S. bilateral relationship. She gave an update on Hong Kong's economic and political development since reunification with China seven years ago and the successful implementation of the "one country, two systems" principle that guarantees Hong Kong's high degree of autonomy.

In addition, Ms. Fong discussed Hong Kong's ongoing role in working with the international community, specifically the United States, in combating terrorism and safeguarding the global trading system. She took questions following her remarks.
