Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office - Insiders Reception (24-Sep-2003)

WNG Insiders On-Site Reception - Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office

On Wednesday, September 24, 2003, the Washington Network Group convened a Washington Insiders On-Site reception and briefing at the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Washington, DC.

This special WNG Members-Only event was convened under our "Washington Insiders On-Site" program series, which is designed to provide meaningful opportunities for WNG Members to develop their professional and business networks in the Greater Washington Region.

Our hosts was Edward Yau, Director-General of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (HKETO) in Washington, D.C. and his senior staff.

Mr. Yau commented on the responsibilities of the HKETO and its efforts to strengthen the unique Hong Kong-U.S. bilateral relationship. He offered an update on Hong Kong's development since reunification with China six years ago, specifically the successful implementation of the "one country, two systems" principle that guarantees Hong Kong's high degree of autonomy. Mr. Yau discussed Hong Kong's economic outlook post-SARS and its political development, particularly public sentiment on the pace of democratization and passage of national security laws. In addition, he discussed Hong Kong's anti-money laundering initiatives and on-going cooperation with the United States and the world community in combating terrorism and safeguarding the global trading system. Mr. Yau took questions following his remarks.

Special thanks to WNG Member Daniel McAtee for making this event possible.
