Insiders Lunch - Why Germans Are Wrong to Fear American-style Capitalism - Olaf Gersemann, Wirstschaftswoche | 2003-Dec-17

WNG Insider's Lunch

"Why Germans Are Wrong to Fear American-style Capitalism"
Olaf Gersemann, Wirstschaftswoche

On Wednesday, December 17, 2003, the Washington Network Group convened a Washington Insiders Lunch at the conference center of Covington & Burling law firm. The WNG thanks its sponsor Covington & Burling www.cov.com for providing venue.

Our guest for this luncheon was Olaf Gersemann, Washington Correspondent of Wirtschaftswoche, Germany's largest business weekly magazine. Mr. Gersemann has recently written a new book titled "Amerikanische Verhältnisse", which provides a comparative examination of the German and U.S. economies. Olaf presented comments at the outset of our meeting, and then engaged is an informal discussion with us over lunch.

The topic is compelling: Why the Germans Are Wrong to Fear American-style Capitalism. Our presenter Olaf Gersemann challenges the underlying assertion that America's cowboy capitalism might produce a few more jobs and a bit more economic growth, but that it also comes with much more income insecurity and social injustice. This thesis is very controversial Germany and, by extension, in Europe. These days, a well-grounded defense of the American model is not often heard in German thought leadership circles. Our presenter has just written a book on the topic titled "Amerikanische Verhältnisse", which is being released in Europe later this month.

Olaf Gersemann is considered to be a rising star among German journalists, and certainly commands the attention of readers concerned with transatlantic business issues. In addition to heading Wirtschaftswoche's bureau here, previously Mr. Gersemann was a respected journalist at Handelsblatt (Germany's largest business daily). In 2001, he won the coveted Ludwig-Erhard-Förderpreis für Wirtschaftspublizistik (a highly-regarded award for excellent reporting on economic and business topics).

This WNG Special Event was convened under our "Washington Insiders" program series, which is designed to provide meaningful opportunities for WNG Members and our guests to develop their professional and business networks in the Greater Washington Region. Our attendees includeed representatives from the corporate, policy, and government sectors.

This "Members-Only" event was limited to 25 attendees.
