J.D. Thomas Founder, CEO & Chief Resource Officer of The Learners Lab Foundation (TLLF), is pleased to announce that it has launched a pilot project, "Filling In STEM Gaps: The Stakeholders Working Group." The working group is a result of stakeholder participation in, and an overwhelmingly positive reaction to, their Workshop on Filling Training Gaps that kicked off opening day events for the US News and World Reports STEM Solutions national conference, "Workforce of Tomorrow." The conference took place at the DC Convention Center on April 4, 2018. As a conference partner and member of the DC Host Committee, TLLF was instrumental in helping plan the event. Launched in 2015, TLLF is a national all volunteer charity that assembles, designs, then connects individuals, programs, companies, specialty groups and employers with the resources they find difficult or impossible to access on their own.

Rick Schneider has been named Senior Vice President, Advancement at the National Center for Family Philanthropy, based in DC. NCFP is the only national nonprofit dedicated exclusively to families who give and those who work for them. Rick was previously COO at WETA.

Maddie Grant has recently rebranded her consulting firm as "Human Workplaces," which now includes separate sites for culture-related training and a buyer's guide for culture related tools. She will be speaking about culture and digital transformation at the Nonprofit Technology Conference in New Orleans in April and ASAE in Montreal in August.

Pamela Keeton, with ArcPoint Strategies, has launched a book tour for Dr. William Overholt, from Harvard University, for his new book titled China’s Crisis of Success. This is a first for Pamela, a DC public relations practitioner with more than 30 years of experience. How does it feel? "I’ve never launched a book and speaking tour. The field of public relations continues to bring interesting challenges," she says.

Nnake Nweke is now Chief Risk Officer at the Broadcasting Board of Governors (BBG); Previously, he was Director, Office of Internet Freedom at the BBG. Additionally, Nnake is a member of the WNG Board of Advisors.

David London is now Senior Director & Head of North America Government Affairs at ofo here in Washington, D.C. Previously, he was Senior Director and Head of North America Government Relations at eBay, where he led their team for eBay and StubHub's public policy goals in the Western Hemisphere.

Michael Rinelli is now head of Business Development/corporate fundraising at Worldfund, which has educational programs in the public schools of Mexico and Brazil. Previously, he was with AEVO Information Technology.

Jim Stockmal, President of the Association for Strategic Planning (ASP) and Director, Smart City Strategy & Architecture Planet Defense, LLC, will be speaking at the Rocky Mountain Strategy Summit on April 21, 2018, in Denver, Colorado; He will be giving a presentation on Smart Cities. Additionally, Jim will be moderating several breakout sessions at ASP's Annual Conference in Chicago during May 9-11, 2018.

Suzan French, president of marketing communications firm FlackShack, has recently been appointed to lead the town of Colonial Beach, Virginia (CBVA) in its revitalization and tourism efforts. CBVA, a river and beach town located on the Potomac 65 mi south of DC, was formerly known as the Playground of the Potomac, until construction of the Bay Bridge made travel to MD shores easier. French and her team are developing a new website and launching a full scale travel and tourism marketing campaign to bring the small, quaint town into the limelight.

Shaara Roman has published a new article on "How to Fix a Toxic Workplace Culture" that appears online at TalentCulture. As Shaara explains: "If you want to win at life, you have to make an intention and a plan to do so. Similarly, if you want to create an engaging culture at your workplace, you have to make an intention and map a strategy to do so. In an era of heightened attention around sexual harassment, a lot of executives are examining their internal cultures. They're finding that there are multiple stressors that lead to toxicity in the workplace, and that the first step to creating change is understanding the context of the problem." The WNG was fortunate to have Shaara present to our WNG Chairman's Forum on "Winning the Talent Game" in May 2017.

Liz Wainger, President of Wainger Group, will serve as a mentor for the Washington Business Journal's 'Meet Your Mentor' event on Monday, February 12. Attendees are offered the opportunity to choose from 40 mentors - "who are among the most influential women in our community" - for one-on-one coaching sessions. The event takes place at the Four Seasons Hotel Washington, D.C. and costs $50 to attend.

John Lawson, Executive Director of the Advanced Warning and Response Network (AWARN), contributed commentary to The Hill on the state of America's alerting system in light of the Hawaii false nuclear alert; John explains how our decentralized system can be made to work. To the point, AWARN is based on "Next Generation Television" technology that will revolutionize emergency alerting. The network is a next-generation, dual-use, public alert and warning system for a mobile, 21st Century America. The AWARN Alliance includes major television broadcasting and tech companies working together to accelerate deployment of the system.

Video now plays a dominant role in the content marketing arena. So says the second edition of the research report, "But Mom Told Me Never to Brag: Raising Your Reputation with Thought Leadership," by WNG member Ed Barks. "With so much online content moving to video, it is time to recognize its importance alongside the other big three­ - speaking, writing, and research," Barks said upon the report's publication. Nancy Mitchell, owner of the firm The Etiquette Advocate, and her new book, Etiquette Rules! A Field Guide to Modern Manners, were selected for inclusion in the National Press Club Book Fair and Authors Night that took place at the Press Club on Friday, November 10.

Marcelle Yeager, CEO of Serving Talent, will present on "Recruiting Diversity: Women and Military" at RecruitDC's Fall 2017 conference on December 7 in Bethesda, Maryland. Javiera Gallardo recently has returned to the greater Washington DC region after working in Chile. We are pleased to report that she has joined the WNG International Roundtable steering committee. Previously, Javiera served as Executive Director at the Washington International Trade Association (WITA) here in the Nation's Capital.

Jeff Lord is now Global Trade Compliance Principal, CSRA Inc, headquartered in Falls Church, Virginia. In his new capacity, Jeff oversees all aspects of CSRA's international trade compliance policies, procedures, and practices. Previously, he was a Senior Manager with EY Global Trade at Ernst & Young LLP.

Sue O'Hora has been promoted to Director of Marketing - Senior Producer at Henninger Media Services. She started her career with Henninger as an intern while she was still in college at the University of Richmond. After graduation, she joined the Henninger sales team in the DC area, later becoming a project manager in charge of DVD, graphics and video compression projects. In 2003, she joined the International Licensing team at Discovery Communications. She returned to Henninger as a Production Manager in 2007 after completing the George Washington University's Institute for Documentary Filmmaking program. In her new role, she will be leading the company's marketing efforts in addition to spearheading production projects as a writer/producer.

Pratish Shere has moved his real estate practice to Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices PenFed Realty and is based out of their Tysons/McLean office.

WNG Board Member Jason Levergood is now based in New York City in a new role as an International Client Services Director on the Grant Thornton LLP, US National Advisory Services team. Congratulations to Warren White, who has joined Chesapeake Search Partners, LLC as a Senior Associate with the Human Resources practice. Jake McGuire has produced a new gift-sized book titled Washington D.C. A Little Square Picture Book that has just been featured in a flattering article online. Local area associations and businesses purchase the book as a welcome gift for DC meetings and conventions. McGuire published the charming 6x6 inch square book specifically as an easy-to-take-home gift for DC's hospitality industry. When the book was first released, the DC Convention Bureau told McGuire, "If you can put our logo on it we'll take 400 copies!" He did and the book took off. Recently, Jake expanded his target audience by personally delivering a sample to more than 100 area hotels as a possible Inauguration Week gift. As of December 1st, more than a dozen area hotels have already purchased them or expressed interest in the gift book, pending room sales for that week. Well done Jake!

Jeff Walyus has started in a new role as Financial Analyst for The Prospective Group. Previously, he was Senior OMB Financial Analyst at the North Star Group, LLC.

Marty Williams is now Government Relations Manager at American Public Works Association, where he is responsible for advancing the association's public policy priorities in the area of cyber-security, emergency management and response. Previously, he was Special Assistant to Congresswoman Brenda L. Lawrence.

Michael McCallum has a new position at SHRM - The Society for Human Resource Management, where he is Director, Global Business Development. Michael drives SHRM’s internationalization strategy and global business development. He is responsible for identifying, creating, and sustaining partnerships abroad in order to grow SHRM’s international delivery network. Regional accountability includes Brazil, Europe, sub-Saharan Africa, while providing services to nearly 10,000 SHRM members outside the U.S.

Christian Moritz shared research that, among Washington Insiders, LinkedIn is the most popular, most credible and has the fastest growth rate of any social media channel. His article gained significant social media engagement and sharing.

Jim Stockmal, President of the Association for Strategic Planning, will travel to Honduras to present a keynote address on "Trends and Drivers: What Everyone Should be Aware of in their Planning" and teach a master class at the Latin America & Caribbean World Strategy on November 17th, 2016. Additionally, Jim will also a holiday party for the National Capital Area chapter of ASP at BlackFinn on November 30, 2016.

Geoffrey Goodale has joined the law firm of FisherBroyles as partner. Geoff possesses over 15 years of experience assisting clients on matters concerning export controls, economic sanctions, import compliance, trade litigation, international intellectual property rights protection, foreign direct investment, cybersecurity, and compliance counseling to government contractors. Prior to joining FisherBroyles, Geoff served in the International Trade practice groups at Foley & Lardner and Pillsbury in Washington, D.C.

Liz Caselli-Mechael is now Corporate Communications Manager at Nestlé USA, in their Washington, D.C. office.

Jeanne Jennings (JeanneJennings.com), recognized industry expert in email marketing strategy, has joined CohereOne, a full-service digital and direct marketing agency, as Partner and Practice Lead for Email Marketing. With her home base in Washington, DC, she will be expanding the agency’s presence to the East Coast.

Nnake Nweke has been named by the Broadcasting Board of Governors (BBG) as the first-ever Director of its newly created Office of Internet Freedom. Dr. Nweke is a WNG Board of Advisors member and recently chaired our WNG Technology Roundtable. Congratulations Nnake!

Franck Goron has moved to Microsoft, where he is Senior Director for Enterprise Strategy and Digital Advisor at Microsoft. Franck is based in Paris, France. Prior to joining Microsoft, He was Insight Program Director, Public Sector, at Oracle, where he led strategic engagements with executive-level customers. Franck is a member of the WNG International Council.

John Lawson has become Executive Director of the AWARN Alliance, a new coalition of television broadcasters and allied technology companies that is developing an advanced emergency alerting system for the U.S. The Advanced Warning and Response Network (AWARN) is enabled by Next Generation Television (also known as ATSC 3.0) which will be the world’s first all-IP digital broadcasting system and is on-track for a 2017 launch in South Korea and the U.S. John is also a principal at Convergence Services, Inc, an Alexandria, Virginia-based strategic consulting firm.

Tom McInerney, Founder and Director of the Treaty Effectiveness Initiative (TEI) in Rome, Italy, has joined the WNG International Council. Tom will be speaking to the WNG in September on the topic of "Responsible Agriculture."

Jake McGuire, the very talented DC photographer who actively supports our WNG receptions, has a new gift-sized coffee table book on our Nation's Capital designed for DC meetings and events. The stately 64 page soft bound book, titled Washington, D.C., A Little Square Picture Book, was specifically produced as an easy-to-take-home memento for associations, hotels, agencies, and incentive travel groups to give in quantity to attendees, conference speakers, committees, boards, and at upcoming Inaugural events.

Rob Coulson, Principal at V3 in Washington, D.C., has recently begun a one-year executive program at Harvard's Graduate School of Design. The Advanced Management Diploma Program targets the continued development of senior-level global real estate executives. In other news, Rob is launching the beta-version of his real estate business intelligence software, Smartfolio. He is inviting owners and managers of real estate portfolios to test the platform and receive discounted pricing for the full release.

Eric Hermann defended and completed his Ph.D. in musicology from the University of Maryland (College Park)! He is currently accepting new clients for his writing editing business, Editing for ESL. Congratulations!

Patrick King, who is CEO of full-service marketing firm Imagine, reports the company has been recognized with the "Best of Prince William" award for graphic design! Congratulations!

Joe Brinker has accepted the position of senior democracy, governance, peace and security advisor in the Middle East Bureau at the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). Joe will cover 11 countries in the Middle East in this role and will be based in Washington, DC. We are proud to have Joe as a WNG Advisory Board member.

Pamela Peseux, president of Cimperium International LCC, an international trade promotion and advisory firm, led the technical program development for two USTDA-sponsored reverse trade missions from East Africa’s port and airport sectors. Ms. Peseux developed the 11-day itineraries which included meetings and site visits with U.S. port and airport stakeholders. Peseux traveled with both the port and airport delegations to three cities in March and April. Ms. Peseux also traveled to India in March as a member of the USTDA India Smart City Technical Advisory Team to participate in a needs assessment workshop with Ajmer city stakeholders. Ms. Peseux organized a technology roundtable which brought U.S. company representatives together with the city officials. Jim will also be a judge at the inaugural "Start-up Experience" as part of St. Johns' College High School's new Leadership and Entrepreneurial Development program on March 5.

Laura M. Labovich, CEO of The Career Strategy Group, has been selected to author a chapter of the new book coming out from Association of Talent Development (ATD) on Effective Networking. She's busy working on that chapter now and eager to see it hit bookshelves in the fall!
